Can You Rent a Car in Montenegro With a Debit Card?

Yes, selected Montenegro rentals accept debit cards, but payment and the security deposit are separate checks. Here's how to verify the exact offer.

Alexander Miller — car-rental & mountain-mobility specialist: This guide focuses on the practical payment question that causes problems at pickup: a debit card may be accepted for one part of a rental and rejected for another. We separate the rental payment, booking payment and security deposit so you can verify the exact offer before you pay. A debit card does not automatically prevent you from renting a car in Montenegro. Selected rental offers accept debit cards, but “debit card accepted” is not enough information by itself. The important question is where the card can be used: for the booking payment, for the rental balance, for the security deposit, or for all three.

Localrent’s current Podgorica guidance is unusually clear on this point: credit-card-free rentals exist, while debit-card acceptance for the security deposit depends on the specific car. Its Montenegro guidance also says some cars can be rented with payment of the rental amount and deposit in cash, and that some vehicles are available without a deposit. Localrent Montenegro · Localrent Podgorica.

That means the useful answer is yes, but only after checking the exact vehicle’s payment and deposit conditions.

The answer in one minute

Think about three separate payments:

Payment The question to ask
Booking advance Can my debit card be used to confirm the reservation online?
Rental balance Can I pay the remaining rental amount with my debit card at pickup?
Security deposit Can this exact debit card be used to provide the security amount?

These answers can differ.

A useful current example is Montrent. Its published Montenegro guidance says debit cards can be used for the rental balance, while a credit card is normally required for the security deposit. That is a different arrangement from a provider that accepts debit for both. Montrent: Rent a Car in Montenegro Without a Credit Card.

Localrent’s current Montenegro pages point in the other direction for selected vehicles: its Podgorica FAQ says that cars allowing the security deposit to be paid by debit card can be selected with the appropriate filter. Localrent Podgorica FAQ.

So do not let a booking page answer a broader question than it actually proves.

A debit card can be enough for a Montenegro rental, but you need to confirm both the rental payment method and the deposit method for the exact car.

Why “debit card accepted” can still fail at pickup

The most common trap is paying successfully online and assuming the same card will work at collection.

It may not.

A supplier can accept a debit card for the rental price while requiring a credit card for the security deposit. The reverse can also be possible in a different offer structure. The card requirement can also be tied to the main driver rather than simply to the person who made the booking.

This is why a search result, a general FAQ or another traveller’s experience is not enough evidence for your own reservation.

Pepecar’s current Montenegro information gives the same practical warning from an aggregator perspective: some suppliers require a physical credit card in the main driver’s name, while others accept debit cards, so the conditions of the individual offer need to be checked. Pepecar Montenegro rental FAQ.

Debit card for the rental vs debit card for the deposit

These are the two questions that should sit at the top of your checklist.

Debit card for the rental price

This is simply the question of whether the supplier accepts your card as payment for the hire and any applicable extras.

For example, Montrent says its rental balance can be paid with major debit cards as well as credit cards and cash. Montrent payment guidance.

Debit card for the security deposit

This is the harder question because the deposit is a security arrangement, not just a purchase.

Localrent explicitly says deposit payment methods vary by vehicle and that its search filters can identify cars where a debit card can be used for the deposit. Localrent Podgorica payment FAQ.

That is the distinction behind the title of this guide. Someone can truthfully say “yes, I paid for my Montenegro rental with a debit card” and still be unable to collect a different vehicle whose security deposit requires a credit card.

What kind of debit card should you check?

Do not assume every card carrying a Visa or Mastercard logo will be treated identically.

At minimum, check these details before booking:

Card detail Why it matters
Debit or credit The provider may distinguish them explicitly
Physical or virtual Pickup may require presentation of the physical card
Cardholder name Some providers require the card to be in the main driver’s name
Network and card type Certain cards or products can be excluded
Available funds A deposit can tie up funds even when it is refundable
Deposit method The same card may be accepted for payment but not for the deposit

A current Montenegro example shows why the card network itself can matter. Sixt’s published Montenegro terms list certain credit and debit cards as acceptable payment methods but exclude some card products, and the security deposit remains a mandatory part of collection. Sixt Montenegro rental information.

Treat supplier-specific card wording as controlling for that supplier. Do not turn one company’s accepted-card list into a country-wide rule.

What about cash?

A traveller who has no credit card is not necessarily limited to debit-card-only solutions.

Localrent’s Montenegro guidance says there are cars where the rental amount and deposit can be paid in cash, and its platform also marks some cars as having no deposit. Localrent Montenegro.

That creates three different paths:

Debit-card rental: the supplier accepts your debit card for the required payment.

Cash-deposit rental: the supplier accepts cash for the security amount, while the rental payment follows the specified payment method.

No-deposit rental: the selected offer does not require a security deposit.

Do not collapse those into “no credit card needed”. They are different financial arrangements.

Does no deposit mean your debit card does not matter?

Not necessarily.

A no-deposit offer can remove the security amount while leaving other payment requirements in place. Conversely, a debit-card-compatible rental can still require a deposit.

Our No Deposit vs No Excess guide explains the difference between money held as security and the liability that remains under the rental agreement.

For the debit-card question, look for the actual payment and deposit fields on the selected vehicle rather than relying on the marketing label.

What about large international rental companies?

This is another reason a country-wide “yes” or “no” answer is misleading.

Europcar’s current Montenegro page says the main driver must provide a major credit card in their own name for the deposit and that debit cards are not accepted there under the stated terms. Europcar Montenegro.

Sixt’s published Montenegro terms, meanwhile, list certain debit cards among acceptable payment methods, while retaining a mandatory deposit at pickup. Sixt Montenegro.

The lesson is not that one business is right and another is wrong. Their commercial conditions differ. Your job as a renter is to identify which supplier and which vehicle you are actually booking, then check that offer’s card and deposit rules.

The five checks I would make before paying

When you find an apparently suitable car, stop before entering payment details and confirm these five points:

1. Is my debit card accepted for the rental balance?

Do not infer this from the online booking advance.

2. Is the debit card accepted for the security deposit?

This is the question most likely to change the outcome at pickup.

3. Does the card have to be in the main driver’s name?

Pepecar, for example, warns that some Montenegro suppliers require a physical credit card in the main driver’s name. Other suppliers may set different rules. Pepecar Montenegro.

4. Is a physical card required?

Ask specifically when your wallet contains only a virtual card or a mobile-wallet version.

5. What happens to the money used for the deposit?

Confirm whether the security amount is held, charged, paid in cash or not required, and what the supplier’s conditions say about its release.

Write those answers beside the car’s total price. A €20/day difference can be less important than discovering at the airport that your only card cannot provide the required deposit.

A message worth sending before booking

Use a booking-specific question instead of a general one:

I am the main driver and will arrive with a physical debit card in my name.

Can I use this debit card to pay the remaining rental balance for this vehicle?

Can the same debit card be used for the security deposit?

Is a credit card required at pickup for this booking?

Please confirm the required payment and deposit method in writing.

If the card is virtual, prepaid, or issued in another person’s name, say so explicitly. Do not make the supplier guess which card you mean.

Save the reply with the voucher.

How this fits with the wider rental decision

The card is one part of the booking, not the whole booking.

Before payment, you should also have clear answers for:

Driver: Is the main driver old enough and experienced enough for this vehicle?

Documents: Is the original driving licence acceptable, and does the licence need an IDP under the supplier’s conditions?

Deposit: How much is required and how is it provided?

Insurance: What excess and exclusions remain?

Pickup: Where exactly will the handover happen?

Return: Where and when will the car be returned?

Route: Does the itinerary require cross-border permission or any other vehicle-specific approval?

For the licence question, see our International Driving Permit guide. For the broader booking sequence, use the complete Montenegro car rental guide. Before you book: compare the full payment arrangement, not only the advertised daily rate.

What if I am flying into Podgorica or Tivat?

The same country-level rule applies: the airport does not remove the need to check the exact supplier and vehicle.

For Podgorica, Localrent currently publishes a specific FAQ saying debit-card deposit acceptance depends on the car. Localrent Podgorica.

At Tivat, treat the airport handover as another separate check. Confirm the meeting point, the supplier contact and the card/deposit requirement for the car you selected rather than assuming every Tivat offer follows the same policy. Our Tivat Airport pickup guide covers the handover side.

The important distinction: “without a credit card” is not one product

Searches such as “car rental Montenegro without a credit card”, “rent a car with debit card Montenegro” and “no deposit Montenegro” can look interchangeable. They are not.

A traveller without a credit card may be looking for any one of these:

  • a debit card accepted for both rental and deposit;
  • a debit card accepted for rental but not deposit;
  • a cash-deposit vehicle;
  • a no-deposit vehicle;
  • a rental where the balance is paid in cash after an online card payment.

This is why a useful rental guide should not simply promise “no credit card”. It should explain which financial condition is being removed and which one remains.

Bottom line

Yes, you can rent a car in Montenegro with a debit card on selected offers.

But that statement is only the beginning.

The reliable way to check a rental is:

Debit card for booking → debit card for rental balance → debit card or alternative for deposit → main-driver/cardholder requirement → physical-card requirement → exact vehicle terms.

Current provider pages show why the answer varies: Localrent says debit-card deposit acceptance depends on the selected car, while Europcar’s Montenegro page states a credit card is required for the deposit. Montrent describes another model in which a debit card can pay the rental balance while a credit card is normally required for the deposit.
